The descent

The descent is on of the first horror movies I saw. I am not a fan of horror but a friend of mine convinced me to see this one. It is a typical horror movie; no good story, many scary moments and bad acting. However, you are still watching highly concentrated and it is very difficult to not feel the concstant threat of the creatures

Juno, Holly, Sarah, Beth, Sam and Rebecca are six best friends who are going to a small house in the Appalachian Mountains (VS). Sarah just survived an accident which killed her husband and daughter. Her friends want to take her out for some distraction. The first morning they all go on a expedition in a cave. They are walking around in the cave and have to maneuver to really small tunnels in order to get to the next space.

Then, suddenly, one of the tunnels they just passed collapsed. There is no way back to the entrance of the cave and so they have to move on. After the tunnel collapsed, Juno confessed that he brought everyone to an unknown cave. This cave has just been discovered. No one has ever been so deep in this cave before. Juno had told the authorities that they went to the Boreham caves, so no one knows that they are locked up in here. While they are walking further and deeper into the cave, they find a wall painting. On the wall painting you could see that there are two possible exits. A couple of minutes later, when they are searching for the exits, Holly falls and breaks her leg. Sam is taking care of her leg and they all carry her except Sarah.

She is walking a couple of meters beyond and she suddenly sees a human creature appear in the distance. She panics and tells the others what she just saw. No one believes her and they think she imagined. Sarah insisted and knew for sure that she really saw someone.

A short time later, they are being attacked by one of the creatures she just saw. The group is driven apart by the fight and the creatures want to kill everyone. It becomes a cat and mouse game inside the cave and everyone is fighting to stay alive.

In the end, Sarah is the only who is still alive and she runs through the cave. But then she slips and falls. She is unconscious. When Sarah wakes up she sees the exit and starts running towards it. She climes out of the cave and runs to her car. After driving a while she starts crying. The she suddenly sees nothing anymore. Everything is black and she realizes that she is still in the cave. It was just a dream. The sounds of the creatures are coming closer and closer.

  1. Hey Rogier,

I really enjoyed reading your review about this movie. I have not seen it but I do have heard of it. Especially the last sentence makes me very curious how this movie will end.
I like your writing style which is very easy to read.
One advise: do not give too much away of the storyline in a review, since we know now that all of Sarah's friends will die..

  2. Hi Rogier, like Stein already said: try not to tell too much about the storyline of the movie! But, I also like your reading style, it makes me more enthousiatic about horror movies (personally, I do not like them very much...)

A point of attention is for instance the fourth sentence: 'to not feel...' should be 'not to feel...'. Futhermore, the VS does not exist in English speaking countries, this should be the US off course!

But, these are all minor points and I do like this blog!
